Maca (Lepidium meyenii)

Maca (Lepidium meyenii), a member of the radish family, is a known herb that effectively addresses the needs of the glandular system of your body. It grows in the Andes Mountains of South America and the root of Maca is typically dried and stored, and will easily keep for seven years.

The plant is cultivated in the Junin plateau of Peru’s Central Highlands, and was highly revered by the Inca. Reproductive health experts believe that Maca may provide a natural means for improving sexual desire and performance, especially in men. It may also support physical and mental strength in both males and females.

Also known as Peruvian ginseng, Maca may help enhance physical energy and endurance, promote mental clarity and concentration and boost work capacity. As an adaptogen, it helps restore stamina and buffer the effects of stress. It also contains several flavones and flavonoid glycosides, which may support the balance of male sex hormones, especially testosterone.

Why Maca is important?

Men in South America have used Maca for thousands of years to help maintain their stamina, prevent fatigue and reduce the effects of stress on their body.  Peruvian men begin using Maca at age 3, and remain strong, fertile and productive, and have immense stamina well into their later life. Maca may increase a man’s libido, and should be taken daily for best results.

How Maca works?

Maca’s reported beneficial effects for male sexual function could be due to its amino acids (building blocks of proteins) , which are required for many functions in the body, including sexual and fertility functions. They also are required in the manufacturing of substances that transmit signals in the nervous system and play a major role in the process of male sexual arousal and physical performance during sex.

Maca – The scientific evidence

In one of the several studies performed to evaluate effects of consuming Maca on male sexual health, treatment of 9 healthy men with gelatinized Maca root (1,500 or 3,000mg per day for 4 months) resulted in “… increased seminal volume, sperm count per ejaculation, motile sperm count, and sperm motility.” It is interesting to note that these improvements in sperm production and motility were not associated with increased production of the reproductive hormones such as testosterone. Animal studies also show that Maca supports improvement in male subjects with erectile performance issues.

Today, Maca’s popularity is very much on the increase, as people discover that the plant really does boost libido, sexual function and overall energy.  A number of scientists have turned their attention to the properties of the root. In Peru, Maca is used by both men and women who want to put more fire into their sex lives. And in the U.S., Europe and Japan, natural supplements containing maca (such as Male Extra) are gaining ardent devotees and buyers.

In short, the more Maca or Maca containing supplement you consume the more benefit you are likely to get. In toxicity studies conducted in the U.S., Maca showed absolutely no toxicity and no adverse pharmacologic effects. In animal studies, the more Maca animals consume, the stronger and more sexually active they become. With a safe male health supplement like Male Extra that contains sufficient and recommended quantity of Maca, you have a safe, effective, nontoxic way to significantly boost your sexual function, without the hazards of prescription drugs.
